US researchers studying people with chronic lower back pain (CLBP) found that those who did lyengar yoga were better at overcoming pain and depression than those who followed conventional treatments for lower back pain.
The US National Institutes of Health were investigating CLBP because it is the largest category for medical reimbursements in the US. The study followed participants for three years and showed that those doing yoga experienced lifted mood, less pain and improved function compared to those receiving standard medical therapy. The statistically significant and clinically important changes were maintained 6 months after the intervention. The yoga group showed a clinically important trend towards reducing their pain medication as well.

Question:
My son had eczema since he was born. He is almost 13 years old now. He was on topical steroids until age 9. Someone recommended Aveeno products, and it somewhat seemed to work. But his skin has gotten worse within the last year. He has itching, face is darkened, dry skin, and exercise-induced asthma. Will acupuncture help?
Answer:
TCM has more therapies than acupuncture. Acupuncture can help reduce the symptoms of asthma and eczema and sometimes other therapies can also be used. Treatment is not appropriate for every patient and he needs an examination for an evaluation.

Question:
My spinal cord received trauma during a cervical disc surgery 10 years ago. The pain had been under partial control with drugs until a week ago. It is total body burning when pressure is applied. Will seeing an acupuncture specialist help?
Answer:
It could, but you have to give it a chance. Most neuropathic pain can be improved by acupuncture treatment. In general, you would want to have 12 to 20 treatments, which is more than average due to the trauma. This is an initial series and depending on outcome, you will know how to proceed. You need to talk to our acupuncturist to find out what can be done in your individual circumstance to find out if acupuncture is appropriate for you.

A small-scale study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology has found that beetroot juice may improve exercise stamina and endurance and may even help to lower blood pressure.
In the study, the researchers recruited eight men aged between 19 and 38, who each consumed 500ml of organic beetroot juice daily for six days before carrying out a series of tests, including cycling on an exercise bike. In the ‘placebo’ phase, the study participants consumed blackcurrant cordial for six days before completing the same tests.
Results showed that after consumption of beetroot juice, the men were able to cycle for an average of 92 seconds longer than after consumption of the placebo. Consumption of the beetroot juice also led to a lower resting blood pressure, a finding consistent with results of an earlier study, which has also reported blood pressure reductions following beetroot juice consumption. (Hypertension, Mar 2008; Vol. 51, pp. 784-790).
